About the Yukon First Nation Education Directorate

The Yukon First Nation Education Directorate (YFNED) is a beacon of transformative education, weaving a First Nations worldview with modern educational practices.

Since its establishment in 2020 by the Chiefs Committee on Education, YFNED embodies a vision of "Unified control over First Nation education to empower our people in our ways of knowing and prepare our children to be active participants in the current world."

At the heart of YFNED is Jordan's Principle, ensuring children have immediate and equitable access to all public services, paired with culturally-rich education through initiatives like their Mobile Therapeutic Unit and Nutrition Program.

"Our children. Our education. Our way." is more than a statement—it's a pledge to ensure that our educational practices are led by First Nations culture and values, offering a sense of belonging and empowerment to Indigenous children in the Yukon.

A Testimonial by Tori Combden, MSc, R.SLP, S-LP(C)

'I joined the Mobile Therapeutic Unit as a new graduate looking for adventure and community in the north.

I am so thankful for the opportunities the organization has given me to learn and grow on a personal and professional level, including SLP specific training, training to help me better understand working within the context of the Yukon, and experiences out on the land with cultural experts and Elders.

I feel honored to have been welcomed into the rural communities of the Yukon, building relationships with families, children, other organizations, and First Nations governments. YFNED’s competitive salary and travel compensation, along with their support, also makes me feel valued for my time and experience.

Ultimately, I am so happy I made the big decision to move to the Yukon, and so happy to work at YFNED.'
